Mobile

What is it?

Checks whether the website appears to be optimized for use on mobile. A sample of three webpages are tested in a sample mobile device.

Why it matters

Mobile use of the web has overtaken desktop usage. For many websites, your primary audience will be mobile. Yet because mobile support is relatively new, and relatively hard to test, many websites fail to deliver an acceptable mobile experience.

It is not usually practical to test thousands of webpages that are being continuously updated on actual mobile phones – the process is too time consuming and cumbersome. Silktide allows you to automate this important process.

How it works

Silktide performs a comprehensive simulation of a mobile device, and analyzes the resulting page as it will appear when first loaded.

A page is considered fully optimized for mobile if:

  • Text is legible without zooming
  • Links are large enough to touch without zooming
  • The page does not scroll horizontally
  • Pinch-to-zoom is not disabled

Very small volumes of small text or links on a page are ignored (e.g. footnotes).

How to fix it

For pages which do not support mobile at all, you will need to redesign the page completely. We strongly recommend a responsive design approach.

For pages which have some layout issues, you will need to address these on a case-by-case basis. It can be useful to simulate a mobile device in your own browser – Chrome provides a mobile simulation mode for this purpose.
